You have two options when it comes to setting up a blog - you can use a free software, or you can create your own blog. I'll show you the pros and cons of both.
Free Blogs
Best for: Bloggers and those who don't want to make money from their blog.
Pros: Very easy to set up and completely free.
Earn Money Form Blog Writer, Cons: Limited editing and video/image uploads, most of the time you can't post or use affiliate links, you can't create a custom URL, and the platform has the right to remove your blog.
Many websites will allow you to set up a blog for free and it's very easy to use. If you're looking to get started with emails for the first time, this might be for you.
However, free blogs can be limited. You can only configure a limited amount of things and your blog will have limited storage space, which can make it difficult to upload large videos and images.
Another disadvantage of having a branded website is that your blog URL will be something like 'www.yourblog.wordpress.com'.
Most free blog sites don't allow you to place ads or affiliate links, which are the main sources of income for most blogs.
However, if neither of these are a concern for you, here is a short list of the best free blogging platforms.
Best Blogging Software
WordPress.com - This free platform web hosting service is easy to use. You have to pay a monthly fee for WordPress ads and labels. You can't make money from ads unless you pay for the premium, personal, or online product. There are also limited options for customization and expansion.
Blogging - Google's free blog hosting service,
Blogging, is very easy to use. However, customization and design options are very limited, and there aren't many options if you want to add new features.
Medium - In medium, the emphasis is more on writing than design. It’s used by many journalists, writers, and consultants, and it’s a great way to share your work with a specific community. You can’t advertise, and it’s hard to build your own brand.
Build your own website
Best for: Dedicated bloggers and those who want to make money from their blogs.
Pros: Full control over design and customization, your own custom URL, and the ability to use ads and affiliate links as you like.
Earn Money Form Blog Writer, Cons: You have to pay. First for your domain name (URL) and then for hosting, but we have some tips for cheap web hosting.
If you’re not very tech-savvy, building your own website might seem like a daunting task. But in reality, it’s really easy, and you can have it up and running in just 20 minutes.
Well, the founder of Save the Student has written an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide that shows you how to start a website.
With your own website, you will be able to create a unique profile (with your own URL), and there is no risk of your website being deleted by a hacker - you will own the website and have full control over it.
WordPress has many templates or 'themes' to choose from - take the time to choose one that suits both your personality and the content of your blog.
Choose something that is clear and simple, with space for large images and easy-to-read fonts (Comic Sans and Courier fonts are no exception).

How to choose a blog
Cat Computer
This can be the easiest or hardest part of starting your blog.
The most important thing right now is to choose your own talent. The biggest mistake new bloggers make in a crowded blogosphere is trying to start something surprising or different.
For example, if fashion is your passion, instead of making clothes, could you combine your passion for fashion and your sincere concern for the environment by writing about eco-conscious designers?
The best way to find a password for a new blog is to:
Check out our other blogs - this should be your first port of call. What has already worked? And more importantly, what is missing? Find gaps in the market.
Use Google - what are people searching for? Use Google search and autocomplete to find out what people are searching for. If they search, it shows that there is interest.
Search forums for commonly asked questions - when people can't find answers to their questions, they go to forums. What are they asking? What advice should they get? This will show you what people are interested in and what information they are missing.
Keep an eye on current trends - what is trending in the media right now? It’s best to choose a topic that has been around for a long time, but if you can keep up with the trends from the start, you can quickly establish yourself as an expert on that topic in front of others. Search #journorequest on Twitter to see what journalists are currently covering.
Think about different types of content – do you know how to use a curriculum/review? Interviews? Essays? Your writing may not be your thing, but your writing sets you apart.
Identify your own interests and hobbies – While all of the above are important, there’s no point in blogging about topics you’re not interested in. You’ll soon get bored and people will notice your lack of interest. Write about how you really feel.

How to Grow Your Blog
Once you’ve built your website, launched your blog, and published your first few posts, the big question is – where are all the readers?
You can’t just expect people to find your posts and start reading them. You have to promote them!
Here are the best and easiest ways to attract more readers to your blog:
Promote your blog on social media

Earn Money Form Blog Writer, Like most businesses these days, if you don’t have a social media presence, you’ll be overlooked.
We recommend setting up pages/accounts for your blog on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and even LinkedIn (after all, it’s your own business, right?). Set up these accounts with the same color scheme/theme as your blog so your brand is consistent and easily recognizable.
Use it to share new posts and tag fellow bloggers/influencers/companies who can share your content and help it reach a wider audience.
You can also participate in paid advertising so your blog can reach an even wider audience, or run a contest to get more followers. Once you have followers, keep them engaged by posting regularly (not just for new blog posts). Connect with other bloggers
Find other bloggers who blog about similar topics. Even if you're a competitor, you'd be surprised how helpful a blogger community can be.
Many bloggers have a 'links' page on their blogs that they use to send emails to their many friends in the community in exchange for a link to your blog. This will help immensely with search engine optimization (i.e., how likely your blog is to appear in Google's search results).
If you connect with other bloggers and share your content, they may like it too. You could even work together!
Reply to messages on your blog
Harry Potter Daily News
If something is happening in the news that is relevant to you, get involved. We call this 'newspaper stealing' and it can help you stand out.
For example, if you're blogging about cheap student baking, search for topics like the latest student finance survey. Students spend an average of £116 a month on food, but you can tell them how they can save money (while eating healthier!).
You can use your hashtags on social media to let people know that you are available to comment, join discussions and connect with sources.
If you are self-employed, journalists may also contact you.
Create engaging content
Earn Money Form Blog Writer, Creating viral content online will allow you to reach a new market and, as a result, increase your readership.
It may be easy to say, but the key to creating viral content is to capture controversial or hot topics related to your blog. As you can imagine, as mentioned above, this often involves newspaper plagiarism.
This is for you, because you will have a passion, opinion, and expertise in this field, so you will be able to come up with ideas that people will want to read, share, and talk about.
How to Make Money Blogging
Once your blog is live, you can (finally!) start looking for ways to make money from it.
The best and easiest ways to make money as a blogger are:
Use affiliate marketing on your blog
People working remotely at a coffee shop
Affiliate marketing works by adding popular affiliate links to your blog’s article listings. You can earn a small commission when readers click through to one of your recommended sites and make a purchase.
These links will take readers to the retailer’s website and the currency you receive will say ‘thank you’ for referring your favorite readers to the site.
Almost all e-commerce websites have some kind of affiliate program, such as Amazon, ASOS and Apple.
Sign in to the membership window. This is a huge organization that can promote thousands of famous products and services worldwide.
Money-saving blogger, Claire Rose, revealed:
We mainly use affiliate marketing as our main source of income, apart from a few pounds a month through Google Adsense.
Affiliate marketing is a good fit for many bloggers. As author Cherie Jones says:
As a blogger, you are constantly recommending products and services to your readers. Many companies offer affiliate programs, so it is very easy to find useful programs to join and start making money.
The key is to be authentic and honest in your marketing. Write reviews and articles with your honest opinions and encourage your readers to buy whatever they find interesting about your product or service.
Add tags to your website
For more visible advertising, you can sell ad space on your blog pages for products that interest your readers.
Ads can be placed anywhere, but they are usually found at the top of the web page or in the sidebar.
You can make money in two ways. CPC (cost per click) means that you are paid a certain amount for each reader who clicks on your ad, while CPM (cost per thousand) means that you are paid a certain amount for every 1,000 impressions your ad receives.
With the rise of AdBlocker plugins, CPC and CPM can be lower, but it depends on your industry and it doesn't hurt to try them.
A quick way to get started is to create an account with Google AdSense.
Write Ads and Sponsored Content
Bags with Glasses
According to the bloggers we spoke to, one of the best ways to make money on a blog is to offer sponsored content opportunities (or ad space). These ads are either paid posts or blog posts.
For example, if Adidas releases new swimwear and you write about women's sportswear, they might pay you to write about the features. You can also include some affiliate links at the top.
This monetization method is usually best when your audience grows. As your readership grows, brands will often approach you to discuss sponsored posts.
Kenzie Harvey of fashion, style, lifestyle, and travel blog LemonoidLice says:
I’ve only had the opportunity to get sponsorships through PR, either directly or through platforms like Instagram Takumi.
Paying for Sponsored Networks
If you have a strong social media presence, you’ll be very attractive to brands. Some people make money from blogging. You can charge for each article/reprint, and the prices can be amazing.
First, you’ll have to work hard to get followers. Brands see your ‘social proof’ (or how many people follow you on social media) as an indication that readers will like what you’re writing about them.
Write a guest blog for journalists
Woman on a tablet
Sometimes, newspapers (or even bloggers) will contact you if you are an expert on a particular topic, asking you to feature on their website.
For example, if you are a budget chef, the press may contact you and ask you to submit budget-friendly recipes for their cookbook.
Don’t be shy about sharing your thoughts on the article. If the editors don’t know who you are, a quick email will reveal the name of your blog.
Work with an agency to create your blog
Believe it or not, blogging has become so popular in the advertising world that companies are now working with bloggers to create ads for brands.
Working with an agency can make money and give you protection, but you need to pursue it first.
Agency fees are also high, which means only large companies will be willing to work with you and smaller freelancers will be afraid.
Depending on your blogging goals, this may or may not be right for you. Using the blogging example again, agency subscriptions can keep you from working with the small independent creators you really want to promote.
Sell digital products on your blog
Shop online for your smartphone
If you have a skill or expertise, there are other ways to charge for e-books, video tutorials, courses, or courses.
For this option to be successful, you need to be able to demonstrate your core competency, or that your content has been effective. It’s not easy.
It can be difficult to get paid by online communities, as they think that everything online should be free. But it’s worth a try, right?
Sell Your Blog
Another option is to charge for a code for ad space or to be mentioned in your weekly/monthly newsletter (if you have one!). It will take very little time, and you can make a lot of money.
However, you will need to build a large mailing list to consider the products.
Get noticed by employers as a blogger
Using your blog to promote your own business or get a job is another (though not direct) way to monetize your blog.
If you’re one of the many students selling online, your blog is a great platform to promote your products (though don’t try too hard, or you’ll disappoint readers).
You can also use your blog as an online brand. This is a great way to build trust and showcase your skills, and hopefully land you a great job.
Think of it this way: For example, your blog is about your own small business. By showing potential employers that you can do it successfully, you demonstrate that you have an entrepreneurial mindset and that you know how to succeed.

The Biggest Challenges of Making Money from a Blog
Woman on a Tablet
Nothing is profitable without hard work and dedication.
Don’t be fooled into thinking that making money from a blog is a long process. Many bloggers make a few dollars a month from their blogs – and that’s after working on their blogs for a while.
To have a chance at making money from blogging, again, you need to have multiple streams of income from different sources. Making money from a blog takes time and it depends on you and your blog. The more readers you have, the more attractive you will be to advertisers.
Many bloggers decide to make money early in their blogging careers. Blogger Ursula Makowska explains:
I started blogging when I was in college […]. I decided to monetize my blog because I was spending too much time and effort writing articles, paying photographers to take pictures, and I wanted to blog all day. I love blogging and want to continue my passion for blogging full-time; it feels good.
Another big challenge for bloggers is competition. Kelly Spice of the Kelly Lifestyle website says:
It’s hard to compete for your time with so many bloggers like me; it’s not uncommon for bloggers to get jobs. The blogging industry is full of aspiring bloggers who are struggling to get noticed. However, with dedication and perseverance, it is possible.
Cherie Jones also says:
Email is challenging because it requires commitment and consistency to fully invest. My only regret is not starting sooner.
I managed to earn my first £50 in my first month, and this month I’ve earned over £200. Now companies are contacting me for sponsored posts, so hopefully my monthly income will increase even more!
Can you make money from blogging?
As we have seen, the answer is yes! But how much you can earn from blogging varies. This is how you can make money blogging in the beginning, but over time, bloggers can really do well.
Making money from a blog takes time and it depends on the blog. The more readers you have, the more attractive you will be to advertisers.
To make good money from blogging, consider having multiple sources of income from different streams and different channels.
